WHAT IS AN MRI?
An MRI, or "Magnetic Resonance Imaging," produces extremely detailed images of body tissue, organs and bones without the need for radiation.
Some MRI scans will require contrast to help enhance the images of certain organs and tissues. This contrast is administered safely by our certified technicians and is a harmless contrast agent.
HOW LONG WILL THE EXAM LAST?
During an MRI patients are required to lie on a sliding table and are positioned by the technologist depending on what part of the body is being scanned. It is very important that the patient remain as still as possible during the scan. Different body parts require various positions and lengths of time, an MRI can last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. Scans below the waist such as a knee will not require the patient to go completely in the machine. For scans requiring a patient to be completely inside the MRI tube please let our staff know if you experience anxiety or claustrophobia. Anti-anxiety drugs can be administered as long as the patient has a designated driver to take them home.
You may be asked to wear earplugs due to the loud noise of the machine. These earplugs can play music to make your MRI experience more comfortable. You may bring in your own CD or iPod/iPhone to be hooked up to a sound system or we can play something for you.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
It is very important that you do not wear anything containing metal, this includes but is not limited too; bobby pins, hair clips, watches, jewelry, eye glasses, metal caps on draw strings and buttons. We recommend you wear comfortable, warm clothing. We will have a secure locker that you can place any items you have on you at the time.
