DEXA

WHAT IS DEXA?

DEXA (DXA) or Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry is a scan that measures bone mineral density. The scan requires you to lay on a soft flat table, and takes less than 10 minutes. The scan will produce a report that will tell you your T-score and Z-score. Your physician will review the results with you and discuss any changes in lifestyle you may need to make such as adding more calcium to your diet.

WHY GET A DEXA?

A DEXA scan is used to diagnose bone loss and osteoporosis, determine how osteoporosis medicine is working and predict your risk of bone fractures.  The age you should get your first DEXA is dependent on a variety of factors including gender. Talk to your physician about when the right time for you to get a DEXA is.
